STARS IN JOHNNO’S EYES

RUGBY legend Martin Johnson CBE is giving youngsters the once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn what it takes to be a World Cup hero.

As England prepare to defend their title, the World Cup winning captain will be focusing on the future of the sport with a series of camps designed to help boys and girls take their game to the next level.

Johnno, one of the nation’s most respected sporting icons, will work alongside the country’s leading professional coaches to develop the skills and techniques of 11 to 16-year-olds of all

abilities.

The Martin Johnson Rugby Camps, launched in 2005 and the only programme of its kind to be endorsed by the Rugby Football Union (RFU), will be held at eight venues around the country during July and August.

Johnno will be making a welcome return to Coventry, Plymouth, Newbury, London, Bristol and Orpington, where his camps were successfully staged last summer, and will be taking the experience to Liverpool and Huddersfield for the first time.

The programme, a joint initiative between Johnno and the RFU, gets underway at Warwick University in Coventry on July 25.

It will then move to Plymouth Albion RFC on July 30 followed by St Edward’s College in Liverpool, on August 1, Newbury RFC on August 6, Ealing Trailfinders RFC on August 8, Huddersfield RFC on August 13, The Portway Rugby Development Centre in Bristol on August 15 and Westcombe Park RFC in Orpington on August 20.

Each of the action-packed camps, which are non residential, will be held over three days with youngsters being taught match skills along with advanced techniques to improve their overall flexibility, agility and speed by RFU-qualified coaches in a fun and secure environment.

Johnno, who will be inviting past and present international players to join him on the camps, said: ‘I am really looking forward to the camps and having the chance to help bring on youngsters who could become top-class players of the future.

‘The last two years were fantastic and I’m sure this summer’s camps will be no exception.

'There is bound to be a great deal of excitement in anticipation of the World Cup getting underway in September and it is a great opportunity to work with youngsters who have a passion for rugby and want to improve their game.’

Hundreds of youngsters have benefited from the camps, with some travelling from as far as Portugal, the USA and Dubai, to enjoy the unforgettable rugby experience.

The three-day camp costs £150 per child and includes coaching, Martin Johnson Rugby Camps apparel and rugby ball, team photograph with Johnno, lunch and other refreshments.
