Oh La La! World Cup 2007 has started off with a bang hasn't it with a ferocious match between France and Argentina. France played very poorly and the Pumas well and truly deserved their win. They showed grit and determination from the outset whereas France made mistake after mistake. Not one player stood out amongst the men in dark blue but you still kept thinking right up until the end that they were going to pull it off and score that much needed try.
The scariest moment for Argentina must have been in the very last seconds of the game. Contepomi took a penalty kick which was, so we thought, going to be the last kick of the game whether it went over or not and the Pumas would be winners. He missed, but we all thought it made no difference BUT.... gasp! The ball somehow stayed in play and France began building an attack from deep within their own half.
It would have been a huge injustice if they had scored at that point as they had not played their usual fluid style at all during the 80 minutes.
But no, it was to be the Puma's day and the host nation became the first team to loose an opening match since England's loss in 1991. Bernard Laporte is not a happy man. It is all uphill for the French now and who knows, if Ireland beat them they would be out of the World Cup 2007.
Never a dull moment!
