Saturday 10th November, Wasps v Munster, 1st round Heineken Cup, Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
Wow what a day, what a game! Decided against the 2.5 hour coach ride from High Wycombe to Coventry and got the train from Milton Keynes instead. The Munster fans were out in force and out numbered us about 10 to 1 but in true rugby fan (and Irish!) style, they were all great lads and we had a laugh with them….I think the 3 flasks of mulled wine my friends Robbie & Polly bought with them helped!
The day got off to a great start when we got off the train at Coventry, we saw none other than the very dapper Joe Worsley getting off the same train and into a cab! We were going to ask him if he would share but we didn’t have a brave heads on at that point!
Fast-forward a few beers and into the game, there was a very amusing montage of player interviews on the big screen including Cips, Dom, Haskell, Payne, and the very cute Eoin Reddan talking about who was the most vain, the most annoying, and who had the best banter! The whole game was very nerve racking with Wasps being 13-20 down at half time with one try disallowed. “Gorgeous” George Skivington (and yes girls, he lives up to his name!) scored an excellent try, we had another disallowed (was NOT a forward pass!!!) and the whistle finally blew for us to pull it back to 24-23!
I must admit, I always drive when I go to games but didn’t on this occasion and the beer flowed freely! I celebrated a bit too hard, what with be-friending the Wasps coach driver thus allowing me to get on it!! The boys hadn’t got on it yet unfortunately but I can exclusively reveal the contents on board: A kettle, pens, LOTS of beer & magners, LOTS of Maxi-muscle products, and that’s about it! Most disappointed. After then be-friending a motorcycle policeman and sitting on his bike whilst posing for photos with Munster fans, the boys started making their way out. I then proceeded to hug Lawrence Dallaglio because he gave me a beer, ask Riki Flutey – who is absolutely gorgeous – what moisturiser her used because he smelt yummy, tell James Haskell he too smelt yummy, then did Mark MacMillans tie for him because he was struggling! Bless,,,,,,
All in all it was a great day out, and an excellent start to our Heineken Cup campaign. The boys did us proud, and were their usual charming friendly selves! So thanks lads!
Bye for now.....
Well, my first blog, here goes.
I’m not a natural born writer, but I am a natural born rugby fan…..well, natural born for the last 3 years!
My love of rugby (and the boys!) started when my, now ex, boyfriends Dad took me to see Wasps play away against Saracens. He is a season ticket holder and to be honest I don’t recall taking much notice of him watching games on the TV or mentioning Wasps or in fact anything to do with rugby! I was bought up on “the beautiful game” (yeah right) of football, Watford FC especially, even though I hadn’t been for a game in years. Graham, the ex’s dad, asked one day if we fancied going to Saracens at Vicarage Road, a ground they share with Watford FC. I don’t remember being particularly excited, just thought “why not”?
It was a cold, cold, cold day and I was sitting in the stands with Hazel, the ex’s mum, with a blanket over our knees and a cup of hot tea! And that is my only real memory of it!! Apart from the one magical moment that changed my life (yes, really, rugby has changed my life!!) forever…….we were in good seats, on the half-way line, about 6 rows up from the front, and there was some sort of ruckus on the pitch involving Lawrence Dallaglio. It was the sight of “our marmite” with that look on his face, steam coming off him, and grabbing someone round the neck. That was it for me. Love. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t about the fighting, or the fact that Lawrence is a big hunk of a man; it was how someone could be so passionate about something. If there is a player with passion, it’s our Lawrence. Have you not seen him during the National Anthems when he’s playing for England?
So that’s it. Hook, line, and sinker. And that is my reason for supporting Wasps. The fact that it was the first game of rugby I saw, and nothing else. I can tell you that my new found love for rugby didn’t impress my family much. My mum wasn’t bothered, my brother – a die hard Watford FC fan – wasn’t particularly impressed, and my Dad, a born and bred Irishman said that if I was going to support a team, it should be London Irish! Or at least Sarries as my Grandfather was Chairman years ago, and my Uncle had a few games for them as a youngster! That is something that always surprises me actually, how rugby wasn’t in my life when I was a child, even though members of my family had very strong links to a top club.
Anyway. I went to a few more matches with the ex, mainly when his mum and dad couldn’t make a game and we used their season tickets. After a while, I found myself wanting to go more and more, looking up news on the website, and flicking through programmes to learn who the players were! (Also went to a few England games at Twickenham but I’ll leave my international experiences for another blog.)
Then the inevitable happened…..my relationship with the ex ended. It was all good, all amicable, but I then thought “damn – who do I go to the rugby with?”
A friend from work, Emma, was my first convert. I managed to convince her that she REALLY REALLY wanted to come with me. So we bought our tickets for the terraces and headed on down to Adams Park, must have been about a year ago now. Going to a game as a singleton was a real eye-opener! I found I was able to ogle the boys without feeling guilty that my boyfriend was standing next to me! Now – don’t laugh or think I’m in the slightest bit strange like most people do, but I’d always had, since day one, a “thing” for the beautiful bottomed Tom Voyce, Wasps number 11 – who up until last season when his best mate Paul Sackey took the title, had scored the most tries each season for every club he’d ever played for – that’s my boy!! |
