It's great to highlight girlies who are doing well within the rugby world. Rugby photographer and Quin's Second Row, Ros Holder tells us how she got to be in pitch side and gives us a few tips on how to snap those thighs! My name is Ros Holder, I am 31 years old and I am a freelance Graphic Designer. I work from home designing books, exhibition catalogues and other things such as logos and business stationery.
Sometimes I work as a photographer as part of my job and even do the odd wedding here and there but most of the time I am an amateur photographer with a passion for sports, travel and flower photography. I am joint club captain for Harlequin Ladies and usually can be spotted playing second row. As the Ladies team have an obvious connection to the mens club I was lucky enough to befriend the Quins Professional photographer Ray Willmott. Ray took me under his wing, got me on the sidelines and taught me a thing or too about capturing the moment, always keeping the ball in the shot, focusing in on the sponsors, as well as the action and using the depth of field to knock out the distracting background of the crowds. Rugby is a very different game through a lens. You have to really pay attention, follow the ball and try and anticipate where the action might take place next. Sometimes getting correct settings on the camera is very difficult as the pitch can often be split down the middle, one half in shadow and the other half bathed in sunlight. I've learnt a huge amount with Ray's help and have been trusted to take photos for the club in his absence. I've also been lucky enough to get work from Rucked.com who sent me to an England training session at Twickenham before last years six nations and to the Guinness Premiership Launch in Hyde Park in August this year. If I'm on the sidelines for a HLFC game then I will be sure to have a camera in hand to document the lovely ladies for our team website. You can check out lots more of my photos on my company website and please email me any comments. I'd love to hear what you think. I'd encourage everyone to pick up a camera and take pictures on the sidelines as its a great way to publicise clubs. Thanks Ros - here we can see some of work so far. Keep them coming!
