RFTG Lisa caught up with Quin's 6'2" back row Chris Robshaw this summer and found out the bits we like to know about at RFTG.
When did you first start playing rugby? I've been playing for as long as I can remember. I started by playing minis at Warlingham. You were last year voted Player of the Season, no doubt a great honour to be recognised by your peers. How much of a surprise was it to hear your name called and how did it feel to be seen as the best? You're right, it was a huge honour...and a massive surprise. It was an amazing feeling, especially to win an award which is chosen by your peers, it's always very special. You're featured in the England Saxons for a huge part and have been named in the Elite squad, but how do you compare yourself to the choices ahead of you? The back row is always very competitive and we have great players in all positions. I feel I just have to continue to work on all areas of my game to make them better. This hopefully will earn me some more first place caps. Traditionally new caps have to sing on the bus. What song did you sing and why? I'm a terrible singer, but I do like to give it a go. I actually had to sing my song at the post-match function which was very embarrassing! I sang 'Build Me Up Buttercup'...I'm not sure why it's my go-to song, I think I just picked it up from my school days. What are your immediate and future goals that you've set yourself? To hopefully achieve a top 6 finish at least allowing us to play in the Heineken Cup next season. Also, making the summer tour to Australia. (Sadly Quins didn't make the top 6, but Robbo did make the summer tour and even captained mid-week games). Do you have any pre-match/game day rituals that you like to stick to? Not particularly, although I do like to have spaghetti bolognaise the night before a game. Are you good at any other sports? I'm quite a sporty person and played the majority of sports at school. I do like a round of golf when the sun's shining. If you weren't playing rugby for a living, what do you think you'd be doing? What do you see yourself doing when your rugby days are over? To be honest, I'm not really sure. I would have gone to University and studied, hoping to find a career path I enjoy. Hopefully I've still got a few years left to come up with a plan! You've been lucky to not have sustained many serious injuries. Is that purely down to luck or good conditioning? I have actually had a fair few injuries in my first 4 seasons or so at the club in which I broke my fibia, hand and ruptured my ACL. Although of recent times the physios, conditioners and coaches have been very good at looking after me and keeping me fresh and healthy. What do you get upto for fun? What's a typical day off like? I like to go and catch up with old mates from school. I try not to do anything too tiring in order to stay fresh for the weekend's game. If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why? I'd be an astronaut so I could experience going into space, floating round without gravity and go on the moon. I think that would be pretty cool! You have a rather large female fan base, any plans to do some modelling like the rest of the Quins boys? Cosmo perhaps? A charity calendar? Ha, I've never really thought about it in too much depth! That's probably because the occasion's never come up...If I did get asked I'm sure I'd probably consider the offer and who knows, probably do it! How do you cope with fame? Being recognised and asked for photographs are all part of the job but does it make you feel uncomfortable at times or do you take it in your stride? It's not been too bad. I'll always try and sign what I can, have photos and chat to people as long as the timing's ok. To start with I found it a little strange when people know who I am, out and about on the streets. Let us in on a secret, something we don't know about you, a hidden talent maybe? I am a quarter German... Finally, any words of wisdom you'd like to pass on or anything you'd like to add? Just thanks for all your support over the years, it's very much appreciated. I hope you continue to enjoy all the games and see you all soon. QUICK FIRE: Favourites:
