 RFTG Interview with Max Evans
 Rugby for the Girls reporter Katy Tipping gets the gossip from Glasgow Warriors and Scotland outside centre and ladies man Max Evans about love, life, lucky pants and of course rugby!
So Max, why is it that you love rugby?
From a early age I’ve always loved team sports especially at school when I played with all my friends. I loved the competitive nature of team sports. But why rugby? Well I suppose it was mainly because I was good at it that made me like it to begin with but also it’s the macho aspect of the sport and the fact that its just a good game to watch and play. It’s a brilliant way to unleash aggression in a controlled and managed way- basically you can hurt people and get away with it. There is also always good manners in rugby, it’s a real gentleman’s game.
What are you feelings about the fact that football is more popular than rugby in the UK?
I find it hard to understand how footballers get so much more money than us when the trainings harder in rugby, the games harder, and its easier to get injured. I suppose the reason why I think its more popular is because football can be played anywhere whereas rugby can’t. It’s a bit had to ruck and maul on concrete in a city whereas a football can easily be kicked up and down a street. At the end of the day I just let it slide, it’s not really about the money just about doing something that I really enjoy however when I see footballers arguing with the ref it really grates against me. It makes me want to run onto the pitch and rugby tackle them! That would never happen on a rugby pitch, the refs are a lot more strict and don’t let you get away with disrespecting anybody. Do you have any pre match rituals?
I have two pair of boxers. One pair that I wear before and after the game and one pair that I wear during every match. I wouldn’t call them my lucky pants, I suppose I’m just a bit superstitious and they have done me well enough so far. I also have a bracelet that I’ve worn since I was 17 or 18 that I have never taken off. It was given to me by one of my best friends when I was at school, Adrian Jarvis who now plays fly half for Bristol, we both had one but he took his one off ages ago. What is your club nickname?
I don’t really have one to be honest, sometimes the boys call me Maxy but no I don’t really have one. Is there a lot of competition between you and your brother (Thom Evans) as you both play rugby for the same team?
Not really. At one point we were both competing for the wing position which was obviously created competition but it wasn’t for long and then I became settled in outside centre. Who is the sexiest woman ever?
Megan Fox is pretty sexy however I wouldn’t necessarily want to date or marry her though. I prefer quirky naturally beautiful girls not girls who are obviously sexy. Personality is also a massive factor in the attractiveness of girls, a girl could be outwardly extremely sexy but if they don’t have a good personality it makes them less attractive. Everyone loses their looks eventually so you have to of fallen for the personality as well.
What would be you perfect date?
Something spontaneous! I love it when a girl surprises me. Maybe going out for a drink and then finding out that she has flights booked to Bora Bora for the weekend. That would be an amazing date! So, where do you call home?
Portugal where my parents live. It’s beautiful there and I really miss the weather when I’m in the UK and my dogs and of course my parents. What or who has inspired you the most?
I know it might sound cliché but I would have to say my Dad. He didn’t come from a very privileged background but he has done well for himself with a lot of hard work and determination. He’s shown me that you can achieve whatever you want to if your willing to get up and go get it. What words would describe you best?
Honest, up for a laugh, and giving. What is your greatest talent or party trick?
I can do a standing back somersault which is probably my best party trick. Very impressive! What would you say your biggest fault is?
I’m very stubborn, I get that from my mum but my brother is a lot worse than me! What motivates you?
The fact that I have a really good life and I want to keep it and make sure that I can give my children and grandchildren a good life just as my parents and grandparent did for me. What do you look forward to when you wake up in the morning?
Going back to bed at night! How do you ever get up?! What’s your favourite song at the moment?
Empire of the Sun – Walking on a dream. Am loving this song at the moment but it is so addictive. You should give it a go. I definitely will. What’s your favourite TV programmes?
Friends, Friday Night Lights, Greys Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Heroes. There’s not really a lot to do at the moment especially with me being injured so the guys often come over to watch our favourites. How is the recovery process coming along?
Obviously it is frustrating when you get injured but I have a lot of people keeping an eye on me which is great because I’m getting better quicker but it also meant they wouldn’t let me play golf when I went back home last week! Initially when your injured it kind of throws you into a dark place but you then get a real buzz when you can do more and more everyday.
