RFTG reporter Katy Tipping speaks to probably the nicest guy in the premiership Ugo Monye.

So Ugo talk us through what you do when you start your day? Well I get up pretty early and make sure I get a really good breakfast inside me because I know I’ve got a hard morning ahead of me. Training is really intense at the moment so every morning I go straight to the club for training and weights sessions. I always have a siesta in the afternoon to rejuvenate me otherwise I just cannot function and then I start thinking about what I’m going to make for dinner. Wow that sounds like a manic day, I find it hard enough just getting out of bed! Do you do this everyday? Pretty much most days! Sometimes there are definitely days when I don’t want to get out of bed but I always do because I would never want to let the boys down. We all have our part to play in the team whether that’s in a match or training; it’s all important. So after these busy days what would be the perfect way for us to relax you? Definitely something spontaneous and last minute. Maybe take me out for dinner and then a few drinks; maybe a trip to the theatre? I really enjoy getting to know someone so something like that would be perfect. Well we are definitely enjoying getting to know you in this interview. How about we start at the beginning? What was your childhood like? I loved my childhood! I grew up in Islington which was brilliant. I’m definitely a city boy as I love to keep busy and there is so much to do in London. I have quite a big family, 2 brothers and 3 sisters who I’ve always been extremely close to. I have a brilliant Mum as well, she’s always been a massive inspiration and so supportive. I bet she’s very proud of you and your rugby career. How did you get into rugby? It all happened when I changed schools. I just started because all my friends were playing as it was a school that was big on rugby and I just fell in love with the game! It wasn’t until I was 17 however that I decided I wanted to make a career out of it. What has been your proudest moment in your rugby career? The 3rd test of the Lions Tour, we were all on a bit of a downer after the 2nd test but that game was beyond all expectations. There was an amazing atmosphere and the crowd just went crazy and then to be top try scorer. It was honestly the best time of my life ever! Another amazing time for you must have been when you scored your first try for England back in March. What was that like? That was a mad mad day. That try was so emotional and definitely a feeling I will never forget. I was so excited because I knew then that we were going to beat Scotland and the whole crowd was singing and jumping and celebrating. It was a very proud moment in my life. I don’t think many people will be forgetting that game either. Where’s your favourite ground to play? It has to be the Stoop. It’s where I made my debut and then Twickenham is literally just across the world. It’s where I feel very much at home. What motivates you to be this focused and driven Ugo? I put a lot of pressure on myself to just be the best I can be as a player and also as a person. I really feel that you shouldn’t let a talent go to waste whatever that talent may be. I always aim to be the best. Hopefully I’m doing a good job. I think a lot of people will agree your doing a brilliant job. So what’s the aim for the future? I would love to get some silverware for Quins and definitely more caps for England. Being part of another Lions Tour is definitely another aim! How are you feeling about 2015? Wouldn’t it be brilliant to play in the World Cup when it is at home? I’m very excited about 2015; sport is blooming at the moment with England just wining the Ashes and sevens becoming an Olympic sport. I can’t wait to get more people hooked on rugby and to hopefully recreate a World Cup win at home. That would be a thousand times more amazing than winning 2003 which seems impossible to believe at the moment. We’ve all got our fingers crossed for 2015. Which player do you most enjoy playing with? Nick Evans. He’s a player who has it all, great all round skills and brilliant vision. I love playing with him and he’s also a great role model. Don’t have a bad word to say about him really. I’m sure there are quite a lot of grass root players that share your opinion. Who was your personal idol when you were growing up? Johnny Wilkinson is a great player and example and just an all round lovely guy but I would probably have to say Jona Lomu. He just changed the way rugby was played and is a massive inspiration for me and so many others. Thank you so much for chatting to us Ugo was completely a pleasure. Is there anything else you would like to add before I let you get back to your training? Definitely! I would like to promote the Help For Heroes calendar because it is just the most amazing charity and cause. Our soldiers are doing the most brilliant job fighting for our honour and any support we can give them and their families we should. They really do! Well the best of luck for this season Ugo. RFTG wishes you the best of luck!
